What is Traumatic Brain Injury?

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a brain injury caused by
sudden trauma. It is one of the most common injuries in serious personal injury
cases. TBI can result when the head suddenly and violently hits (or is hit by)
an object such as:

  •  The inside a car
  •  The inside of a helmet
  •  A street or pavement or floor
  •   A flying object or projectile
  •   Tools or equipment on the job
  •   Electrocution
  •  Or any other object

What are the Symptoms
of Traumatic Brain Injury?

Symptoms of a TBI can be mild, moderate, or severe,
depending on the extent of the brain damage. A person with a mild TBI may or
may not lose consciousness. Depending on the severity of the TBI, symptoms may include
the following:

  • Headache
  •  Confusion
  • Lightheadedness
  •  Dizziness
  •  Blurred vision or tired eyes
  •  Ringing in the ears
  •  Bad taste in the mouth
  • Fatigue or lethargy
  •  Change in sleep patterns
  • Behavioral or mood changes
  •  Trouble with memory, concentration, attention,
    or thinking
  •  Vomiting or nausea
  •  Convulsions or seizures
  • Inability to awaken from sleep
  • Dilation of one or both pupils
  • Slurred speech
  • Weakness or numbness in the extremities
  • Loss of coordination
  • Restlessness or agitation.

When to Seek Medical Care?

Anyone with symptoms of TBI should immediately seek medical
attention, even if you do not feel that the injury is all that severe. This is
underscored by the death of actress Natasha Richardson (Liam Nielson’s wife).  Ms. Richardson fell on the bunny slopes while
skiing in Canada. Although she had a headache, she thought she was okay, and
declined medical treatment after the fall. However, three hours later she was
rushed to the hospital where sadly, she died.

Recovering from
Traumatic Brain Injury

Approximately half of severely head-injured patients will
need surgery to repair hematomas (ruptured blood vessels) or contusions
(bruised brain tissue). Disabilities resulting from a TBI depend upon the
severity of the injury. Some common disabilities include problems with:

  • Thinking, memory, and reasoning
  • Expression and understanding
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Personality changes, aggression and acting out

In severe TBI cases, the victim may be partially or
completely unresponsive, or in a coma or vegetative state.
