On Thursday, January 21, 2010, Toyota Motor Corporation announced a recall of 2.3 million vehicles in the United States. In fact, the recall is at least the fourth major U.S. recall by Toyota in the past two years. Earlier, Toyota notified 4.2 million owners of a defect that may cause floor mats to jam acceleration pedals. 1.7 million of those same consumers are subject to the January 21st recall as well.
Group Vice President for U.S. Sales, Irv Miller, stated, “The investigation indicates there is a possibility that certain accelerator pedal mechanisms may, in rare instances, mechanically stick in a partially depressed position or return slowly to the idle position.” This time around, no Lexus- or Scion-brand vehicles were included in the recall. According to Karen Aldana, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration spokeswoman, the agency found it to be a serious safety issue and, after discussing the issue with Toyota over the last several days, is pleased that Toyota is taking immediate action. As to whether or not the recall comes as a result of reported accidents or injuries, a spokesman for Toyota U.S. sales would not comment.
