Stork Craft Crib Recalls

Four reported infant suffocations have been linked to Stork Craft drop-side cribs. This has prompted the largest-ever recall of cribs. On November 23, 2009, Stork Craft announced a recall of 2.1 million cribs. The recalled cribs were distributed between January 1993 and October 2009, and were sold at major retailers including BJ’s Wholesale Club, Sears and Wal-Mart stores, as well as online through Target and Costco. Nearly 150,000 of the recalled cribs carry the Fisher-Price logo.

Faulty hardware is one source of malfunction in the crib’s drop-side mechanism. This problem, among others, can cause the drop-side to detach, creating a dangerous space between the drop-side and the crib mattress, where children can become trapped.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is evaluating the incidents leading up to this most recent recall, and has admitted that in the past, the CPSC has “just not been acting as quickly as we should have.” This is Stork Craft’s second recall this year. The company recalled 500,000 cribs in January. According to the Houston Chronicle, more than 5 million drop side cribs have been recalled over the past two years due to the deaths of at least a dozen young children.
This recall has definitely caused alarm for some parents. The good news is, the CPSC is considering new rules for making cribs safer, and is even considering an outright ban on drop-side cribs. For now, the chairman of CPSC, Inez Tenenbaum, recommends that owners of such cribs should either quit using them or contact Stork Craft at 877-274-0277 to order kits from the manufacturer to immobilize the crib sides.
