Mesothelioma & Asbestos Trial Attorneys

What is mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is a form of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos fibers. It affects the mesothelium, a lining that covers most of the body's internal organs like the stomach, the heart, and the lungs. This cancer is most common in the lungs.
Who is a at risk?
Over the years, asbestos has been used in many different industrial and consumer products. Those who worked in the building or construction industry, shipyards, auto manufacturing plants, oil refineries, or chemical plants often were exposed to asbestos on the job - between 1940 and 1979, approximately 27.5 million people were occupationally exposed to asbestos in the United States. Once the dangers of asbestos became well known, efforts were made to reduce exposure and some countries have banned its use all together. In the U.S., asbestos is still used but is heavily regulated by agencies like OSHA or the EPA.
The danger is not over
Mesothelioma can take years to develop, long after the exposure period is over - anywhere from 20 to 50 years later. Trends indicate that rate in which people are diagnosed will continue to increase over the next ten or more years. According to the World Health Organization, exposure to asbestos fibers at the workplace is one of the leading causes of occupational disease worldwide.
Exposed workers may be entitled to recover compensation from the companies that made or used asbestos-containing products. However, asbestos litigation can be complicated. Cases often involve more than one defendant; discovery can be time-consuming and difficult; and, expert witnesses play a critical role. Hiring the right law firm is critical.
