- Plant explosions
- Refinery explosions
- Automobile and motorcycle wrecks
- Trucking and bus wrecks
- Building Fires
- Electrocution
- Heater explosions
- Other defective products
Burn injuries are classified by degree:
First-degree burns affect only the outer layer of skin. The
burn site is red, painful, dry, and there usually are no blisters. Treatments for first-degree burns may include
cold compresses, lotions and ointments, and pain medication.
Second-degree (or partial thickness) burns involve the outer layer of the skin,
called the epidermis, and the deeper layer called the dermis. The burn site
appears red, blistered, and is swollen and quite painful. Treatments for
second-degree burns may include, antibiotic ointments, dressing changes,
debridement of the burn site, possibly systemic antibiotics, and pain
medication. Second-degree burns are often treated in-patient, especially when
10% or more of the skin’s surface is burned.
Third-degree (or full thickness) burns destroy the epidermis and dermis.
Third-degree burns may also damage the underlying bones, muscles, and tendons.
The burn site appears white or charred and may be very painful. Sometimes the nerve
endings themselves are burned creating a lack of sensation. Treatments for
third-degree burns may include the same treatments as for second-degree burns
plus skin grafting, functional and cosmetic reconstruction surgery, IV fluids
and antibiotics, creating a warm, humid environment for the burn, nutritional
supplements and a high-protein diet. These burns are usually treated in-patient
and oftentimes victims need therapy for extended periods.
Medical treatment for burn injuries can be extremely
expensive and can last a very long time. Often the victim cannot work temporarily
or even permanently. At the Neese Law Firm, we are dedicated to helping burn
injury clients in their time of need to get their lives back.
